Dale Richard Summers, 65

Dale Richard Summers, 65, of Raymond died April 15, 2011, at home after a long battle with cancer.

Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 23, at Hough Funeral Home in Raymond. Celebration of life services will follow at 12 p.m. Cremation will be accorded. A private burial service will be at the Green Pond Cemetery, Pearl, in Pike County at a later date. The American Legion Triple Star Post 299 of Raymond will conduct military rites.

Born July 15, 1946, at Murrayville in Morgan County, at his grandparent Baker's home, he was a son of the late George Robert and Dorothy Irene (Baker) Summers. He married Charlynn Harper, and they later divorced. His second marriage was to Sherry Gail Herrington at Acworth, GA. He later married Andrea Kathryn "Kathy" (Kappel) Pennock Sept. 5, 2001, and she survives.

Mr. Summers was employed at AT&T for 30 years. He had held positions in Atlanta, Hackensack, NJ, Golden, CO, and Columbia, SC. He had traveled worldwide doing customer education. He held positions as manager of data technicians, manager at AT&T's "NOET" education centers in Atlanta and Columbia, was lead courseware developer for network data training, and coach for the International and Domestic Data Training while on the migration team during a four-year "loan" to NCR Corporation. He retired in 1998.

He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees using his Veterans Administration benefits and educational opportunities provided by his employer via Illinois State University, Kennesaw College, Georgia Tech, University of South Carolina and Emory University.

A decorated member of the United States Marine Corps, he served in the Vietnam War. In 2008 and 2009, he was president of the Montgomery County Veterans Assistance Commission. He was also a member of Montgomery County Ducks Unlimited, Raymond Chapter, American Legion Triple Star Post 299 of Raymond, and a past member of American Legion Post of Villa Rica, GA, and the VFW of Smyrna, GA.


He was also a member of Meyerhardt Masonic Lodge #314 of Acworth, GA, having held several chairs, a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Atlanta-Orient of Georgia, and past member of the Yaarab Shrine Temple of Atlanta, GA. He was a member of the Milton Christian Church since 1960.

Mr. Summers enjoyed doing extensive research and study of his family tree. He was of English-Welsh descent, with his family immigrating to Delaware then to North Carolina and ultimately settling in Scott County, IL. His fourth great-grandfather, Joseph, was a Revolutionary War soldier with the North Carolina Continental Army.

Survivors include his children, Dale Richard (wife Tammi) Summers of Villa Rica, Reggie D. (wife Amy) Summers of Quincy, and Angelia (husband Darrin) Clark of Woodstock, GA; two stepsons, Robert (wife Tracy) Pennock of Raymond, and Adrian (wife Trish) Pennock of Morrisonville; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; one great-grandchild; four brothers, Carl of Vinton, IA, Glenn of Pearl, Warren of Springfield and Roger of Pittsfield; and three sisters, Barbara (husband Albert) McIntire of Pearl, Emily Verenski of Seattle, WA, and Pamela Summers of Milton.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David.
