Shirlen Arthur Rosenthal, 94, of Raymond passed away on March 14th 2022 at the Timber Creek Assisted Living in Litchfield.
Visitation will be held on Friday March 18, 2022 from 4 to 7 at St. Raymond’s Catholic Church in Raymond. Funeral Mass will be at 10 AM on Saturday March 19, 2022 at St. Raymond’s Catholic Church, burial will follow at St. Raymond’s Catholic Cemetery in Raymond.
Shirlen was born January 6, 1928 in Edwardsville Illinois, the son of Arthur and Edna Johnson Rosenthal. He graduated from Morrisonville High School with the class of 1945. On November 26, 1947 he married Mary Lorraine Krager in Raymond.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the 1st Field Artillery Heavy Armor 6th Infantry Division PTO from 1946-1947. He was stationed in Korea on the 38th Parallel during the winter of 46-47. On September 11, !947 Shirlen crossed the 180th Meridian on the USS Gen. Mason M. Patrick and was granted an unofficial but high covenant Naval Award known as the Domain of the Golden Dragon.
After returning home from the war Mr. Rosenthal farmed in the Morrisonville Raymond and Harvel area until he “retired”.
Shirlen and Mary were some of earliest and biggest fans of Reba McEntire, they attended many of her concerts and stayed in contact over the years.
Shirlen and his brother Kenneth were able to go together on the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight with his Nephew Wayne as their Guardian in April of 2011.
He was a member of the St. Raymond’s Catholic Church, a life member of the American Legion Triple Star Post 299 in Raymond, and a member of St. Raymond Knights of Columbus for 74yrs. He had served 55yrs on the Drainage District Board, 10 yrs on the Panhandle School Board and 4 yrs on the Montgomery County Health Department Board.
His son, Dennis wife Julie Rosenthal of Raymond, son-in-law John Barto of Raymond, former daughter-in-law Donna Rosenthal of Buddha Illinois, survives him. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren Ryan and Jaimie Rosenthal, Kylee and Adam Gutshall, Tyler and Erin Rosenthal, Brian and Shonda Barto, Kevin and Katie Barto, Jason and Alyssa Barto, Mitch and Erin Rosenthal, Darcie Rosenthal, Tonya and Justin Yepsen, Darin and Sunny Rosenthal and Kayla and Adam Pennock. 26 Great Grand Children, 7 Step Great Grandchildren and 8 Step-Great Great Grand Children and many nieces and nephews also survive him.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mary on Oct. 6, 2015, sons; Thomas Lee Rosenthal on Oct. 23, 2000 and Larry Joseph Rosenthal on May 16, 2006 and daughter Marilyn Kay Barto Nov. 22, 2020.
Memorials in Shirlen’s honor maybe given to the Raymond American Legion or the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
