I will always remember the fun times we had, drinking coffee and shooting the bull, as he would say, such a caring man he loved his kids and grandkids, he was always talking about how proud he was. I will miss you my dear friend, you will always have a place in my heart, love ya!

Dear Schaake's',
We were very sorry to hear of Darrell's passing. Although we hadn't seen him since Uncle Bob's funeral, we think of our Wheat relatives a lot. We hope you will remember all the happy times and fun memories from his life. He was a good man and father. One trip through Edwardsville from another state, I took my middle son to the Leclaire baseball field. A man was pitching to his grandson. We got to talking and I told him about my dad, LeRoy Wheat who played at EHS & turned pro at18. Turns out he played baseball at EHS with Larry & had stayed in touch with him through the years. Small town connection! Sorry we couldn't be there today to honor him. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Darrell used to take me fishing as a small boy and was always a straight shooter, many things I did in my lifetime mirror his as he taught me many things at such an early age. I remember the first time he first brought Mary into our family Christmas at grandmas. I haven't seen him in a while but I know someday I will see him again and tell him how important he was to me as a child. RIP my friend

What I will always remember about Darrell is his laughter. He always had a good joke and a great laugh! I didn't spend much time around him since our family lived in another state, but I do remember the fun and love at aunt Eleanor and uncle Ray's house. Always a party! May you continue the party in heaven cousin Darrell!

I was fortunate to talk with Darrell this past February at lunch at his residence in Lichfield. He was the same old Darrell from years past. He was joking around and talking sports. Then he told us all about how proud he was of his grand children and their athletic endeavors. I can still remember him riding thru town in his white Ford pick up with his arm resting out the door. We will miss him.

Sorry for your loss. Your dad was a great coach, mentor and leader in the Hillsboro community. I spent many nights eating an early breakfast with him at the "greasy spoon" receiving words of wisdom from him. Great man!!

Darrell was one great guy. Voted Homecoming King by EHS Class of '61. Kind, funny, loyal. We need more like him. Our classmates and I will miss him so much. An honor to be his classmate and friend back in 'the good ole days'. My sympathy goes out to his family.
